It is necessary to make sure the pot end of C5 is kept at ground potential as you switch. C5 connects to the pot and R4 just as before but the lower end of the pot must then be permanently connected to ground with a high value resistor, anything above about 33k should do as it only has to be much bigger than the 330R emitter resistor so as to not affect the gain. The switch is then used to short out that resistor connecting the pot direct to ground for extra gain or leaving it in circuit in series with the pot for lower gain. If you want to dot all of the Is and cross all of the Ts you could even add a second resistor in series with the pot permanently to add the Rds of the JFET back in and prevent too much gain being added when the pot is set close to 0R.
